A Gathering to Raise Awareness About Plastics and Marine Ecosystems

Eco-Bahia foundation participated in the “Noches de Inframundo” event, organized by Cenotes Urbanos and Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C. in the community of Chemuyil.

Through the SAK Program, the foundation offered a talk led by Nadia Islas, hydrobiologist and supervisor of the Environmental Education Department, bringing together community members in a space to reflect on the impact of plastic on marine ecosystems.

The Alarming Reality of Plastic in Latin America

During the conference, data from UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) was shared, revealing that Latin America and the Caribbean produced over 36 million tons of plastic annually until 2019, with projections of a 126% increase by 2060.

The issue of microplastics, especially nurdles—small plastic pellets that contaminate beaches and oceans and severely affect marine life—was highlighted.

Partnership with Nurdle Patrol: Citizen Science to Protect the Sea

At the event, Eco-Bahia introduced its partnership with Nurdle Patrol, an international citizen science project led by the University of Texas that promotes monitoring and collection of nurdles.

This collaboration strengthens the work of the SAK Program, a comprehensive initiative for environmental education, waste collection, and community awareness that seeks to change consumption habits and encourage proper waste disposal.

“It is essential to understand the impact of plastic on our ecosystems and our health. With programs like SAK and partnerships like Nurdle Patrol, we can work together for a cleaner future,” said Luis Verdin, manager of Eco-Bahia foundation in Mexico.

Environmental Education as a Driver of Change

The SAK Program not only aims to reduce marine pollution but also to build a culture of responsible consumption, sharing valuable information with international organizations such as Ocean Conservancy and generating a positive global impact.

Through its participation in “Noches de Inframundo,” Eco-Bahia foundation reaffirms its commitment to environmental education, conservation, and community involvement, promoting knowledge as a key tool to protect our ecosystems.
