Conservation of Sea Turtles
Currently, we carry out the Sea Turtle Conservation Program both in Mexico —where our story began— and in the Dominican Republic. In Mexico, in front of the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya complex, we care for one of the most important beaches in the state of Quintana Roo for the nesting of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), both endangered species. Every year, more than a thousand nests find refuge on our coasts. In the Dominican Republic, we work on the beaches of Samaná, where the Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo, Bahia Principe Grand Samaná, and Cayo Levantado Resort hotels are located. We also operate on beaches near the Bávaro and Playa Nueva Romana complexes. Here, the main species are the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and the green turtle. At Playa Nueva Romana, we have had the privilege of recording hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) nesting. All of these turtles are threatened species.
Projects
Care for females
We observe and monitor all females that manage to nest. We take morphometric measurements and ensure the laying process occurs without disturbance.
Projects
Management of nests
We evaluate the location of each nest and, if necessary, relocate it to a secure incubation enclosure.
Projects
Maintenance of nests
We protect nests left on the beach by placing special signage and conducting constant monitoring throughout the incubation period.
Projects
Monitoring of hatchlings
We accompany the hatchlings to the sea, ensuring their first journey to life happens without obstacles. We also release hatchlings born in the incubation enclosure.
Projects
Nest inspection
We perform counts of emerged hatchlings to evaluate birth rates and better understand the reproductive success of the species.
Projects
Tagging program
We participate in the tagging program for adult females promoted by Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C., thus contributing to scientific knowledge for their protection.
In front of our hotels, we protect vital portions of coral reef: essential ecosystems for marine life and the health of our beaches.
At Eco-Bahia, we are fully aware of the challenges this fragile ecosystem faces. Therefore, we take action to preserve it:
Reef Zone Delimitation
We mark swimming and transit areas to prevent harmful human practices from damaging the corals.
Awareness Campaigns
We conduct awareness campaigns directed at both guests and local communities, explaining the importance of corals for marine life and the protection of our coasts.
Coastal Ecosystem Conservation
We organize beach clean-up events and participate in national and international environmental celebrations, always focusing on marine and terrestrial biodiversity.
Reef Restoration
We carry out a coral assisted reproduction program through microfragmentation for implantation in tree-style nurseries, to later be integrated into the environment in star reefs.
