A 20-Year Commitment to Conservation

Over the past 20 years, Eco-Bahia has protected a total of 17,657 loggerhead and green turtle nests, releasing 1,465,186 baby turtles into the sea. In addition to safeguarding turtles, the foundation has protected wildlife, caring for injured or at-risk animals alongside expert veterinarians.

In 2009, Eco-Bahia protected 57 hectares of jungle and created the Nature Interpretation Center, a perfect space for children and adults to learn and engage with nature. The center offers ecological tours by foot or bicycle and has welcomed over 50,020 national and international visitors, including students from various educational levels.

Environmental Education as a Conservation Tool

To protect the environment, Eco-Bahia has raised community awareness through environmental education talks. Over 31,000 staff members from different departments of the complex have participated in spreading good environmental practices.

The foundation has also reached schools of all educational levels in Chemuyil, Akumal, and Puerto Maya, engaging more than 13,000 students with talks, workshops, ecological tours, and celebrations, strengthening their connection with nature.

Flora Protection and Reforestation Programs

In 2013, Eco-Bahia began protecting local flora through the Wildlife Conservation Management Unit (UMA), safeguarding approximately 27,000 native plants. Additionally, the Roqui Nursery has produced 783,188 ornamental plants to date.

Facing the resort, Eco-Bahia also protects an important coral reef, forming partnerships with research centers such as REFF and CICY, conducting ongoing monitoring to ensure marine conservation.

Strategic Partnerships and Environmental Certifications

Teamwork is a core value for Eco-Bahia, which has established partnerships with organizations like Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México, A.C., Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA), and CICY, developing conservation projects that remain active today.

The foundation also created MARTI (Environmental Management System of the Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative), earning certifications such as Clean Beaches in 1999, Green Globe in 2011, and EarthCheck in 2015, highlighting its commitment to good environmental practices.

Looking Ahead to the Future of Conservation

In 2020, Eco-Bahia will continue renewing its environmental protection and education programs, working with staff and students with dedication and commitment. Its main goal remains preserving the environment and implementing strategies to mitigate environmental impact, ensuring a sustainable legacy for future generations.
