Environmental education in Tulum

To celebrate the Day of the Dead and support the Municipality of Tulum’s initiative to reactivate libraries, the “Hanal Pixán Altar Model Contest” was held at the Héctor Aguilar Camín Library in the community of Coba. Participants, children between 10 and 12 years old, created altar models using 100% recyclable materials as part of the environmental education program “Recycle, Reduce and Reuse to Transform our Environment.”

The Eco-Bahia foundation, in coordination with the Bahia Principe Ecological foundation, served as part of the judging panel. The main objective was to raise awareness among children and their families about proper waste management, recycling, and environmental protection.

Promoting creativity and traditions

During the event, Katia Courdurier, director of the Eco-Bahia foundation, thanked the Environmental Education Department of the Tulum Municipal Libraries, led by Nilvia Lizama Guerrero, for the invitation. She highlighted that initiatives like this not only celebrate cultural traditions such as Hanal Pixán altars, but also encourage children’s creativity and promote respect for the environment through the use of recyclable materials.

The closing ceremony included the awarding of prizes to the winners: financial incentives, T-shirts, flowers, and special recognition presented by Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort. This gesture honored the participants’ dedication and reinforced the commitment to environmental education in the community.
