On the International Day for Biological Diversity, Eco-Bahia reminds us of the importance of maintaining our commitment to nature. Biodiversity refers to the vast variety of living beings on Earth and the natural patterns that shape them, forming the foundation of life on the planet.
According to the UN, the rate of extinctions is alarming: one thousand times higher than normal. “This loss is caused by human activity and may be worsened by climate change,” warns Katia Cordourier, Director of the Eco-Bahia foundation, who also points out that “we must recognize the need to protect biodiversity, begin with ourselves, and take action, especially at the local level.”
This year’s theme, “Our solutions are in nature”, emphasizes hope, solidarity, and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future in harmony with the environment.
Despite technological advances, we remain fully dependent on healthy ecosystems. It is essential to find a balance that allows us to move forward without neglecting the care of our planet.
The year 2020 became a time of reflection, opening opportunities to raise awareness and seek sustainable solutions to the environmental crisis. The United Nations explains that we must “build back better,” using this time to strengthen the resilience of nations and communities as we recover from the pandemic.
Now more than ever, we must show our determination to “flatten and reduce the curve” of biodiversity loss, for the benefit of humankind and all life on Earth.
