Community and nature in action

Eco-Bahia, together with students from Telesecundaria Eleuterio Llanes Pasos, residents and homeowners of Tulum Country Club, and team members from Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, commemorated the International Day for Biological Diversity with activities aimed at protecting the natural environment.

Among the actions carried out were area cleanups, wildlife care, and an environmental photography contest, reaffirming the community’s commitment to biodiversity and respect for ecosystems.

“We are part of the solution”

Since 2001, May 22 has been recognized as the International Day for Biological Diversity, instituted by the UN General Assembly. In 2021, under the theme “We are part of the solution”, the campaign emphasized the importance of community cooperation to preserve nature and live in harmony with it.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, biodiversity is key to addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, access to water, and health. In this context, Eco-Bahia promoted local initiatives that strengthen this global message.

Photography contest and environmental education

In collaboration with Telesecundaria Eleuterio Llanes Pasos in Ciudad Chemuyil, the foundation organized the contest “Discover the great variety of wildlife that inhabits my environment”, in which students participated with photographs showcasing the richness of species in Quintana Roo. These images highlighted the beauty of local wildlife and the importance of conserving it.

Additionally, at Tulum Country Club, residents and homeowners joined the initiative by sharing photos of flora and fauna. As part of this project, an exhibition will be held at the Clubhouse, along with the creation of a community calendar for 2022.

Commitment to biodiversity and against plastic

“With these activities we raise awareness about the importance of caring for and protecting the flora and fauna around us, and about coexisting in harmony with nature,” said Katia Cordourier, director of the Eco-Bahia foundation.

The foundation also joined the Akumal Ecological Center in the campaign “For a plastic-free season”, whose main goal is to keep beaches clean to support sea turtle nesting and ensure their hatchlings grow in a pollution-free environment.

United for conservation

The director of Eco-Bahia concluded that community collaboration is essential to protect biodiversity: keeping green areas clean, properly separating waste, planting native species, and above all, maintaining the commitment to act for nature.

These initiatives confirm that small collective actions can make a real difference in the preservation of biodiversity in the Yucatan Peninsula and worldwide.
