On the occasion of World Water Day, Eco-Bahia foundation built strategic alliances to protect underground ecosystems that recharge the Yucatán Peninsula aquifer. With the support of Cenotes Urbanos, Ecocaribe, Jáaal Kaak Naab, Be Diving, special guests, and students, a clean-up was carried out in “La Cueva” in Chemuyil and in the “La Bruja” cenote in Playa del Carmen.
During the event, more than 500 kilos of waste were collected, including hazardous materials, special handling waste, and urban solid waste (recyclables, non-recyclables, and scrap). This initiative highlighted the urgent need to protect natural spaces that secure access to water, a resource vital for all life on the planet.
World Water Day was proclaimed in 1992 by the UN during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness of the importance of preserving this essential resource. Today, more than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, underlining the urgency of promoting sustainable development to ensure the planet’s viability for future generations.
In the Yucatán Peninsula, the karst system represents the main source of aquifer recharge, providing more than 90% of the region’s water supply. For this reason, actions led by Eco-Bahia foundation directly contribute to preserving this unique natural heritage.
“These integration activities allow us to highlight the urgent need to act with empathy and awareness,” said Yuritzi Espino, Manager of Eco-Bahia foundation. As part of the event, talks were given on proper waste separation and integral waste management, as well as on the fragility of the karst ecosystem.
Thanks to the collaboration of more than 40 volunteers and the support of Jáaal Kaak Naab in ensuring the proper disposal of recyclable materials, the goal was achieved: inspiring new agents of change committed to environmental conservation.
One of the main purposes of Eco-Bahia foundation is to foster environmental awareness through the promotion and implementation of actions that protect biodiversity. These initiatives not only support conservation but also generate a multiplying effect among communities, visitors, and volunteers.
In addition, as part of the #somosecoistas movement, the blog post “Water, a resource to protect with all our ecoism” shares 8 practical tips to save water and prevent waste, reinforcing the message that every action counts in building a more sustainable future.
