On International Coastal Cleanup Day, Eco-Bahia took part in the event organized by the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo at Xcacel-Xcacelito beaches, removing 210 kilograms of plastic and glass. All solid waste collected over the three days will be sent to the recycling center at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort.
Last weekend marked the International Coastal Cleanup Day, a key date to tackle litter on beaches and other areas around the world. Following all COVID-19 safety protocols, Eco-Bahia, Bahia Principe Residences Riviera Maya, ZOFEMAT, Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México, the Municipality of Tulum, and citizens from Chemuyil participated in the three-day effort to clean the Xcacel-Xcacelito State Reserve, a sanctuary for sea turtles.
The beach cleanup began with welcoming remarks from Alejandro Arenas Martínez, Head of Protected Natural Areas in the Central Zone at the Institute of Biodiversity and Natural Areas. In this 300-meter section of beach, a total of 210 kg of solid waste was collected, including glass, plastic, wrappers, and biological debris.
“It is vital to pay attention to the waste generated every day. Items like plastic containers break down into small particles that can easily reach the jungle, mangroves, rivers, and seas,” said Katia Cordourier, Director of Eco-Bahia.
Recycling and Environmental Care
All solid waste collected during the three days of beach cleanups will be sent to the Recycling Center at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, ensuring proper management and promoting the circular economy.
“It’s time to consider every action we take when visiting beaches or leaving waste outdoors. Proper waste management helps prevent water, air, and natural area pollution, protecting plants, animals, and all of us who share this planet,” concluded the Director of Eco-Bahia.
These activities help maintain the scenic beauty of the Reserve, raise public awareness about beach preservation, and promote environmental care. Participating in cleanup campaigns is an effective way to protect coastal ecosystems and ensure a sustainable future.
