As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability in the Dominican Republic, the Eco-Bahia foundation has launched a new composting program at Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo. This initiative aims to transform organic waste into natural fertilizer to enrich the hotel’s gardens and green areas.
Hotel staff and members of the foundation recently participated in the first composting training session, where they learned the basic principles of this technique. Composting involves the controlled decomposition of organic matter—such as food scraps, leaves, and branches—into a nutrient-rich material known as compost.
During the session, participants explored:
- What types of organic waste can be composted
- How to properly manage and maintain a compost pile
- The environmental benefits of using compost in landscaping
This hands-on approach equips the hotel team with the knowledge and tools to implement composting effectively, aligning with Grupo Piñero’s sustainability goals.
The composting program led by the Eco-Bahia foundation has several key objectives:
- Reduce the volume of organic waste sent to landfills
- Improve soil health in the hotel’s gardens
- Produce natural fertilizer for in-house landscaping use
In this initial phase, the team has already created two compost piles, which will be monitored over a 21-day period. After this active phase, the compost will move into maturation before being used as organic fertilizer.
This project is part of the broader environmental initiatives promoted by the Eco-Bahia foundation across the destinations where Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts operates. It reflects a commitment to responsible tourism and sustainable resource management.
Composting is a powerful tool to:
- Promote the circular economy
- Reduce the ecological footprint of hotel operations
- Educate employees and guests about sustainable practices
With the launch of this new composting program at Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo, the Eco-Bahia foundation takes another meaningful step toward a greener future. Transforming waste into valuable resources not only enhances the hotel’s environment but also helps instill a broader culture of environmental sustainability across the Caribbean.
