Eco-Bahia Celebrates One of the Most Successful Sea Turtle Conservation Seasons in Mexico
Eco-Bahia has released the preliminary results of the 2025 Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Season, once again positioning Playa Aventuras DIF as the beach with the highest nesting activity of Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta) in Mexico. It also remains one of the strongest conservation programs in the Caribbean thanks to continuous monitoring, high-quality data, and long-term scientific research.
As an index beach, Playa Aventuras DIF plays a key role in national environmental research, allowing for the effective protection of Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta) and Green/White Turtles (Chelonia mydas). This work has been instrumental in ensuring their survival amid growing environmental threats.
Although the season is still ongoing and active nests remain on the beach, preliminary data reflects an outstanding effort. A total of 1,678 nests were recorded (472 from Loggerhead Turtles and 1,206 from Green/White Turtles), along with the release of 139,540 hatchlings into the sea. This includes 41,798 Loggerhead and 97,742 Green/White Turtle hatchlings, achieving an impressive 96% success rate in turtle sightings.
Through the tagging program of the Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexico Association, 172 steel-monel tags were applied, strengthening scientific identification and long-term monitoring of these iconic Caribbean species.
The field operation was carried out by a team of five trained technicians, joined by five Environmental Engineering students from the Autonomous University of Chiapas (UNACH), who completed professional internships during June and July. Fundación Eco-Bahia also actively participated in the 23rd edition of the Sea Turtle Festival, as well as in municipal and state committees focused on turtle conservation.
More than 26 years of uninterrupted work have strengthened a conservation model based on science, community involvement, and environmental education. This long-standing commitment continues to position Playa Aventuras DIF as a national benchmark in the protection of Caribbean flora and fauna.
Luis Verdin, Manager of Fundación Eco-Bahia Mexico, stated:
“Playa Aventuras DIF reminds us every day of the enormous responsibility we carry as guardians of one of the Caribbean’s most emblematic species. The results of this season reflect the commitment, discipline, and passion of our team. Every protected nest and every hatchling released is one step closer to ensuring that these species remain part of our natural heritage. We will continue working with determination and science to honor this mission.”
The Foundation expresses sincere appreciation to the field technicians, students, volunteers, and everyone who contributes year after year to the success of this conservation initiative. Thanks to their dedication, the program remains a regional example of regenerative tourism, aligned with the environmental vision of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts.
Eco-Bahia invites the community, travelers, and environmental allies to support the conservation of the Caribbean’s natural heritage. Donations can be made through the official website
