DONATE

Eco-Bahia continues to work actively on the sea turtle protection program in Mexico. To date, 839 nests have been recorded, of which 438 belong to loggerhead turtles and 401 to green turtles. These figures reflect the commitment of the foundation and its partners to conserve these endangered species in the Riviera Maya.

Do you know how the sea turtle conservation program works? Through coordinated efforts, the Eco-Bahia team ensures that every nest is protected from the moment the turtle arrives on the beach until the hatchlings begin their journey to the sea.

Night monitoring during nesting season

During nesting season, which runs from May to October, the turtle protection team monitors the beaches every night. The goal is to observe 100% of the adult females that arrive on the coast and make sure they can lay their eggs without distractions from lights, furniture, or human presence.

Once the turtle finishes nesting and returns to the sea, specialists place a marker to identify the nest. This includes key data such as species, nesting date, and nest number.

Nest registration and protection

Registration is essential for conservation, as it allows the team to safeguard the location of each nest for the two months they remain on the beach. In the event of weather changes that may affect the area, the collected data makes it possible to relocate the nests and ensure the survival of the eggs.

In this way, Eco-Bahia and Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts strengthen their efforts in sea turtle protection in the Riviera Maya, contributing to biodiversity conservation and maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems.
