Coral reef conservation in Riviera Maya

In front of the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort lies an important section of the coral reef, an ecosystem with an extremely slow regeneration process and exposed to external factors and climate change. The Eco-Bahia foundation, aware of the risks this resource faces, conducts research in collaboration with the Yucatan Scientific Research Center (CICY) and the Public Research Center of the CONACYT System.

Biologist Katia Cordourier Real, director of Eco-Bahia, explained:
"We are concerned that the coral reef and its entire ecosystem, where numerous marine organisms interact, remain in the best possible condition. That is why we began research activities in March, including a comprehensive sampling to continue conserving this vital resource."

Scientific research to protect marine ecosystems

With the participation of Dr. Adán Caballero-Vázquez, a researcher in the Water Sciences Unit at CICY, and seven social service participants, various samplings were conducted to evaluate the health of the reef and associated ecosystems.

The sampling included:

* Transect monitoring to identify the abundance of organisms that make up the reef.
* Detection of invasive marine species, especially the Lionfish (Pterois antennata).
* Water sampling to identify contaminants in nearby cenotes that could impact the ecosystem.

Support from Scuba Aquatic and Eco-Bahia’s commitment

These research activities were made possible thanks to the support of Scuba Aquatic, which provided the necessary equipment and trained personnel.

Through these actions, the Eco-Bahia foundation reaffirms its commitment to promote, organize, and carry out scientific research for the conservation and protection of all plant and animal species, both marine and terrestrial, in the Riviera Maya.
