A year of environmental achievements

Eco-Bahia, promoted by Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts and with over 20 years of experience in Mexico, presented its 2022 results through its four main programs.

“I want to thank all associations, volunteers, and Grupo Piñero for their commitment to the environment, which has allowed us to exceed all expectations in our results,” said Yuritzi Espino, Manager of Eco-Bahia foundation.

Coastal and marine ecosystem conservation

In 2022, the foundation protected 1,621 nests of loggerhead and white turtles, releasing 146,969 hatchlings and tagging 171 females, with Playa Aventuras standing out as the most important nesting beach for sea turtles.

The coral reef restoration program was developed in collaboration with OCEANUS, A.C., and will continue implementation in 2023, strengthening the protection of these critical ecosystems.

Natural area conservation and reforestation

A total of 10,337 native plants, including palma chit, nakax, and despeinada, were conserved, and 960 plants were reforested. “The conservation of our beaches is a shared responsibility. We collaborate with Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, organizations, and communities to promote order, cleanliness, and proper waste management,” stated Yuritzi Espino.

Beach and cave clean-ups collected over 704 kg of waste across five beaches and two caves, highlighting active volunteer participation.

Wildlife monitoring and environmental education

The Wildlife Monitoring and Protection program attended to 1,207 wild and domestic animals and managed 270 hives. The Environmental Education and Outreach program engaged over 4,000 people through ecological tours, workshops, walks, and visits to the Tumben-Lu´um Nature Interpretation Center.

Additionally, talks were offered to 1,200 Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort staff and 537 students on best environmental practices, sea turtle conservation, waste separation, and responsible water and energy use.

Collaborations and community impact

The foundation participated in the SAM Festival with the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA), organized clean-ups in cenotes and local communities, promoted sustainable education at congresses, delivered food to 70 Mayan families, and fostered cultural activities through contests and plant donations. Specialized talks on biodiversity, including the jaguar, were given by naturalist Raúl Padilla Borja.

“This year we will continue working with the same enthusiasm to protect our planet, our only source of renewable and non-renewable resources. Caring for water, the jungle, wildlife, and promoting environmental education remains our priority,” concluded Yuritzi Espino.
