On April 20, the Eco-Bahia foundation participated in the event “Nights of the Underworld” at Cenotes Urbanos – The Dive Machine, Playa del Carmen.
The evening was dedicated to the volunteer community, who learned firsthand about the Sea Turtle Conservation Program that protects the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) along the coasts of Quintana Roo.
During the talk, the Program Coordinator highlighted the importance of Playa Aventuras DIF, recognized nationwide as one of the most significant nesting beaches for the loggerhead turtle.
The nesting season, from May to October, depends on the work of the so-called “turtle guardians”, who conduct night patrols to monitor nesting females, protect nests, and safeguard hatchlings.
Biologist Itandehui Ramos explained how the program engages different departments of the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort.
Through sea turtle conservation training and sustainable tourism practices, both direct and indirect staff actively contribute to protecting these endangered species throughout the six-month nesting season.
This strategic alliance has kept the program alive for over two decades, becoming a benchmark in marine conservation and sustainable tourism in the Riviera Maya.
Foundation Manager Yuritzi Espino reaffirmed that sea turtle conservation is only possible through collective action:
“We are all an essential piece in sea turtle conservation. By joining efforts, we ensure the protection of their habitat for future generations.”
The Eco-Bahia foundation continues working tirelessly to protect sea turtles and their habitats. We invite the community, guests, and partners to join this noble mission.
