As part of International Recycling Day, Telesecundaria Eleuterio Llanes Pasos and the Eco-Bahia foundation carried out the project “Turning waste into something useful.” This initiative is part of the school’s annual curriculum and is aligned with the Foundation’s objectives.
The student exhibition highlighted the importance of environmental education, ecological awareness, and corporate social responsibility, showing how recycling can transform waste into valuable resources.
Students presented an exhibition of items they created using recyclable materials. The project’s main premise was simple: design functional objects from materials that would otherwise end up as waste polluting the environment.
This activity not only encouraged creativity but also helped raise awareness about the importance of responsible waste management to reduce pollution.
Environmental problems caused by poorly managed waste are evident. Many discarded items end up on beaches, in mangroves, cenotes, and streets, affecting not only the image of tourist destinations but also harming marine wildlife, local fauna, and flora. These practices are causing serious damage to the environment.
Through initiatives like this, the Eco-Bahia foundation emphasizes that every action matters and that it is possible to change habits to protect the ecosystems of the Riviera Maya and Quintana Roo.
To encourage students to continue these practices at home, the Eco-Bahia foundation rewarded participants with T-shirts and donated low-grade towels from the hotel to be reused instead of becoming waste.
This reinforces the message that recycling and reusing are key tools for sustainability, while also inspiring younger generations to become positive agents of change for the planet.
