Eco-Bahia strengthens urban biodiversity through reforestation efforts

With a strong commitment to sustainability and biodiversity conservation, Eco-Bahia actively participated in the reforestation campaign “Leaving Footprints of Life”, organized by the civil association Moce Yax Cuxtal A.C.. This initiative aims to mitigate the effects of climate change, reduce urban heat islands, and restore ecosystems in Playa del Carmen by planting native trees.

Over the course of four successful reforestation days — on August 17 at Avenida CTM, August 25 at Avenida Constituyentes, and most recently on September 14 and 29 around the Cenote Cojón de Gato in Bosque Real — more than 100 trees were planted with the collaboration of over 100 volunteers, all dedicated to restoring the city’s urban ecosystem.

“Each tree planted is another step toward creating greener, more resilient, and more livable urban spaces. These activities strengthen our commitment to environmental stewardship and demonstrate the power of teamwork to achieve meaningful change,” said Luis Verdin, Manager of the Eco-Bahia foundation Mexico.

Native species to restore urban ecosystems

Among the selected species were cedar, mahogany, Flor de Mayo, ceiba, and chit palms, carefully chosen for their ability to enhance local biodiversity and contribute to ecosystem restoration. Beyond beautifying the urban landscape, these trees play a crucial role in the fight against climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, regulating temperature, and improving air quality.

Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This initiative is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
  • SDG 13: Climate action
  • SDG 15: Life on land

Through these actions, the Eco-Bahia foundation reaffirms its commitment to building a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities, while also reinforcing the mission of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts to lead environmental responsibility efforts.

“We are deeply grateful to the civil association Moce Yax Cuxtal A.C. for leading this noble cause, and to all the volunteers who participated. Thanks to their dedication, we are leaving footprints of life that will have a lasting impact on the environment and on future generations,” concluded Verdin.
