Environmental Commitment in San Pedro de Macorís
To mark the International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves, the Eco-Bahia foundation took part in the 10th Environmental Education Congress "Environmental Initiatives in the Management of the Higuamo River Basin", a key event focused on the protection of Dominican rivers.
The congress, held at the Bahia Principe Grand La Romana, brought together members of the Multisectoral Coalition for the Conservation of the Higuamo River Basin. Discussions centered on innovation, technology, social programs, and waste management, with special emphasis on the urgent need to reduce pollution in aquatic ecosystems.
Eco-Bahia’s Conservation Actions
During his presentation, Alex Matas, Director of the Eco-Bahia foundation RD, shared updates on ongoing projects in the areas of environmental education, conservation, and restoration.
“Grupo Piñero’s objectives are always focused on driving environmental conservation. That is why we support joint initiatives that generate a positive impact on both the environment and local communities,” said Matas.
This reinforces Eco-Bahia’s role as a key contributor to the protection of water resources and coastal ecosystems in the Dominican Republic.
The Multisectoral Coalition for the Higuamo River Basin, founded in 2007 in San Pedro de Macorís, develops conservation initiatives with the support of the private sector, government, and environmental institutions.
As part of the congress, Eco-Bahia led the first public-private working group for the conservation of the Soco River Basin, with the participation of:
- Members of the Boca del Soco and Los Arados neighborhood associations.
- Representatives of the Dominican Navy.
- The mayor of the Ramón Santana municipality.
- Executives from Grupo Piñero.
This initial meeting established a short-term action plan and laid the groundwork for creating a future co-management municipal committee. The initiative aims to involve municipalities from El Seibo, Piedra Blanca, Pedro Sánchez, and Hato Mayor, expanding collaboration to strengthen the protection of Dominican river basins.
Through these initiatives, Eco-Bahia reaffirms its commitment to protecting water, rivers, and mangroves in the Dominican Republic, working alongside communities, authorities, and strategic partners. These joint efforts are essential to safeguarding ecosystems and ensuring a healthier future for the next generations.
