Commonly known as “coastal universes,” mangroves are trees capable of withstanding high levels of salinity mixed with freshwater. They form forests in flooded areas at sea level, on flat and unstable shorelines with relatively calm waters.
These ecosystems provide multiple environmental services, from protecting against erosion to serving as nurseries for a wide range of marine species. In the Dominican Republic, they are prominent in the Bay of Samaná and the Bávaro Lagoon, where they play a vital role in biodiversity and ecological balance.
Beyond their ecological role, mangroves have a direct impact on the economy of tourism destinations. They function as natural barriers against storms, waves, and erosion, safeguarding coastal communities and infrastructure.
At the same time, they host a great diversity of plants and animals. Many species of fish, crustaceans, and birds depend on them for breeding and development, making them essential for local food security and the economy.
Mangroves also contribute to mitigating climate change. Through their ability to capture and store carbon, they help reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Additionally, they recycle nutrients and improve water quality, benefiting nearby ecosystems such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows.
In Samaná, where Grupo Piñero operates four properties —including the recently opened Cayo Levantado Resort— Eco-Bahia foundation focuses on mangrove restoration. “At Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo we work together with the local organization CEBSE on a mangrove nursery with red, white, and black species, intended for restoration projects in Samaná”, explains Alex Matás, Director of Eco-Bahia foundation.
Responsible tourism and sustainable experiences
Beyond their environmental importance, mangroves also attract visitors interested in birdwatching, kayaking, and exploring nature. One example is the eco-route offered to guests of Cayo Levantado Resort to Los Haitises National Park, organized by Eco-Bahia foundation as part of an experience that combines luxury, wellness, and environmental connection.
For these reasons, conserving mangroves in the Dominican Republic is essential to ensure environmental balance, support the local economy, and improve the quality of life in coastal communities. At Eco-Bahia foundation, we are committed to protecting them and preserving what we value most: our environment.
