Grupo Piñero, through its Eco-Bahia foundation, has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to protect endangered marine turtles.
The collaboration aims to conserve hundreds of turtles that use Dominican beaches in Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Altagracia during the nesting season.
Through this agreement, Eco-Bahia foundation joins the Ministry’s Marine Turtle Conservation Program on beaches such as Nueva Romana, Boca del Soco, Caño Patricio, and Arena Gorda.
Species like the Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, and the migratory Leatherback Turtle are part of the nation’s natural heritage and biological richness.
Key actions under this program include maintaining updated nesting records, monitoring coastal protection projects, reforesting with endemic and native coastal species, training technicians and program leaders, and engaging the local community in conservation efforts in Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Altagracia.
Since its founding in 1999, Eco-Bahia foundation has expanded its natural capital conservation projects. Its first program focused on marine turtle protection along the central coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico, releasing over 1.5 million hatchlings and attending more than 1,000 wildlife recovery cases.
With its expansion to the Dominican Republic, Grupo Piñero implements marine turtle conservation actions in a country where it operates 14 resorts, a residential complex, Playa Nueva Romana, and the PGA Ocean’s 4 golf course, making it the hotel chain with the highest number of owned rooms in the country.
Commitment to Sustainability
The Marine Turtle Conservation Program complements other Eco-Bahia foundation initiatives in the Dominican Republic, including the restoration of the Punta Balandra whale-watching viewpoint, provision of waste separation containers in schools, and environmental education programs.
In this way, Grupo Piñero and Eco-Bahia foundation reaffirm their commitment to ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and environmental education, ensuring a positive impact in the Dominican Republic.
