The Mesoamerican Reef System (MAR) stretches magnificently from Isla Contoy on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to the Bay Islands of Honduras. As the second-largest coral reef in the world, this marine wonder is home to over 800 species, including sea turtles, whale sharks, and iconic corals like staghorn and elkhorn.

The Eco-Bahia foundation is deeply committed to protecting and restoring this vital ecosystem. Beyond its incredible biodiversity, the reef acts as the first natural barrier against storms and hurricanes, safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of millions who rely on its ecosystem services.

Urgent Conservation Strategies for Coral Reef Degradation

With 60% of Caribbean reefs under threat, coral degradation has reached a critical global tipping point. In response, Eco-Bahia is focusing on restoring coral populations to support marine biodiversity and strengthen coastal resilience in the region.

A Transformative Alliance with OCEANUS, A.C.

Since 2023, Eco-Bahia has partnered with OCEANUS, A.C., a marine conservation organization with over a decade of experience. Together, they launched the Eco-Bahia Reef Restoration Program, focusing on the rehabilitation of reef areas located in front of the Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts complex.

Following the selection of restoration sites, the project progressed with the construction of coral nurseries and educational demonstration structures. The first nurseries have already been installed to house coral fragments and support transplantation and monitoring efforts.

Early Results and Future Impact

“Our collaboration with OCEANUS allows us to not only restore reefs, but also to integrate training, participatory monitoring, and research,” said Yuritzi Espino, Manager of the Eco-Bahia foundation.

As the program advances, Eco-Bahia encourages communities to broaden their awareness of the interconnection between land and marine ecosystems. Every action matters—and fostering a culture of active participation is key to driving local changes that support sustainable coexistence with nature.

Join the Effort to Restore Our Reefs

“The conservation of our reefs is essential for the future of our region,” adds Yuritzi Espino. The Eco-Bahia foundation invites everyone to get involved in environmental education and reef restoration initiatives.
