Eco-Bahia foundation, as part of its ongoing mission to promote biodiversity conservation and environmental education, organized a series of activities for Mexico’s Tree Day. These initiatives aimed to raise awareness about the importance of trees and the protection of ecosystems, joining efforts with the campaign “One person, one tree.”
Students from Universidad Riviera Playa del Carmen visited Eco-Bahia foundation to strengthen academic partnerships and develop cross-disciplinary skills. During their visit, they learned about the conservation projects carried out by the foundation and the sustainability practices implemented at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resorts, recognized as a Socially Responsible Company (ESR).
The visit included presentations on Eco-Bahia’s conservation programs, a guided tour of the interpretation center Tumben-Lu´um, and a tree planting activity with native species. Students will prepare a sustainability and social responsibility report based on their experience.
In collaboration with Moce Yax Cuxtal A.C., Cenotes Urbanos, Eco-Caribe, The Home Depot, and local residents, Eco-Bahia foundation participated in the reforestation of the urban park “Cheje,” which includes a cenote and a cave. Twenty native trees were planted with the support of Flora Fauna y Cultura de México, Río Secreto, Moce, The Home Depot, and Eco-Bahia. Volunteers showed strong commitment during the activity.
Additionally, Cenotes Urbanos organized educational tours to highlight the ecological importance of underground ecosystems and the benefits they provide for biodiversity and water conservation.
To mark the importance of preserving green areas, Eco-Bahia foundation carried out reforestation activities across different areas of the resort complex. Seventy-three native trees were planted, including Palma Kuka, Nacax, Chit, Chicozapote, Chaka, Jabin, Ciricote, Naranjillo, Akits, and Balché.
As part of the awareness campaign, participants also watched the short film “What would you do if you held the last seed of the last tree on Earth?”, encouraging reflection on the vital role trees play for all living beings.
Yuritzi Espino, Eco-Bahia foundation Manager, stated: “Trees are the essential source of life on this planet. Beyond being the lungs of the world, they are vital for the survival of humans and other species.”
Eco-Bahia foundation also encouraged participants to observe how trees support biodiversity. Trees contribute to gas exchange, fertile soil formation, erosion prevention, clean rivers, aquifer recharge, and serve as shelter for wildlife.
With these initiatives, Eco-Bahia foundation continues to strengthen its mission of biodiversity conservation and environmental education, reaffirming that protecting trees and ecosystems is essential to achieving a sustainable future.
