A Real Commitment to the Ocean
In 2025, Eco-Bahia Mexico, an environmental initiative of Grupo Piñero, reaffirmed its leadership in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems in the Mexican Caribbean through the Sak Program—an integrated conservation strategy with measurable results and strong community involvement.
Throughout the year, the program mobilized 237 volunteers, cleaned more than 3.3 kilometers of beach, and removed over 600 kilograms of coastal waste, positioning itself as one of the region’s most impactful environmental initiatives.
What Is the Sak Program?
Sak is the marine and coastal ecosystem conservation program of Eco-Bahia, focused on protecting beaches and oceans, reducing marine pollution, and generating scientific data on coastal waste.
Its goal is to foster a culture of shared environmental responsibility among Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts collaborators, local communities, and strategic partners, encouraging active participation in environmental conservation.
The Sak Program combines field action, applied science, and environmental education, contributing to the preservation of natural capital and strengthening a regenerative tourism model in the destinations where Grupo Piñero operates.
This comprehensive approach not only removes waste but also helps identify its origin, generating valuable data that supports informed environmental decision-making at both local and global levels.
Impactful Results
Throughout 2025, the Sak Program carried out 12 coastal cleanup events —10 at Playa Aventuras DIF and 2 at Playa Xcacel-Xcacelito— with the participation of collaborators, residents of Tulum Country Club, ZOFEMAT Tulum, and environmental partners.
As a result, 3.32 kilometers of beach were cleaned, 4,170 nurdles (primary microplastics) were collected, and 600.56 kilograms of solid waste were removed from the coastal environment of the Mexican Caribbean.
In parallel, the program strengthened its scientific approach through the monthly analysis and classification of wrack and dune waste, reaching a total of 329.95 kilograms of analyzed debris.
This information was systematized and shared with Ocean Conservancy, contributing key data to the global understanding of marine pollution patterns and reinforcing data-driven environmental action.
Awareness and Collective Action
“The Sak Program represents much more than beach cleanups; it is a tool for awareness, science, and collective action. Every piece of waste removed and every data point shared helps protect our oceans,” said Luis Verdín, Manager of the Eco-Bahia Foundation in Mexico.
This vision strengthens the responsible relationship between local communities and their natural environment, demonstrating that ocean protection is a shared responsibility.
The success of the Sak Program has been made possible through a strong network of strategic partnerships, including Tulum Circula, ZOFEMAT Tulum, Ocean Conservancy, Nurdle Patrol, Casa Cruz Inmobiliaria, Colillarte, and Scubaquatic.
These collaborations enhance citizen participation, expand the program’s reach, and increase its long-term environmental impact.
The Sak Program is aligned with the mission of Eco-Bahia, established in 1999, which promotes a regenerative tourism model where natural capital conservation, environmental education, and community collaboration are fundamental pillars.
With measurable results and a long-term vision, Sak has become a benchmark for environmental action in Mexico, demonstrating that protecting coastlines and oceans requires ongoing commitment, applied science, and collective effort.
These actions reinforce the role of Eco-Bahia Foundation as a regional leader in marine conservation and regenerative tourism, inviting the community to actively support the protection of the environment and marine life.
