An agreement to protect marine biodiversity

Eco-Bahia foundation and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources have signed a collaboration agreement to safeguard endangered sea turtles that inhabit tropical seas. The initiative aims to conserve hundreds of turtles that nest on the beaches of Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Altagracia during nesting seasons.

This agreement integrates Eco-Bahia foundation into the Sea Turtle Conservation Program led by the Ministry. The actions include key beaches such as Playa Nueva Romana, Boca del Soco, Caño Patricio in San Pedro de Macorís, and Arena Gorda in Macao, La Altagracia province.

Endangered sea turtle species in the Dominican Republic

Among the species benefitting are the Green turtle, the Leatherback turtle, and the Hawksbill turtle, which use these beaches for nesting. The Loggerhead turtle, which migrates through the Dominican Republic, will also be protected. All of them are part of the country’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

Alex Matas, Director of Eco-Bahia foundation Dominican Republic, stated: “Ensuring the survival of sea turtles and protecting biodiversity in general is a shared responsibility. We are proud to join efforts with the Ministry of Environment in this important cause.”

Key actions of the agreement

The agreement includes updating sea turtle nesting records, monitoring coastal protection efforts, supporting reforestation with native species, and offering training sessions for technicians and local program leaders. Community engagement in turtle conservation will also be promoted in Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Altagracia.

The signing ceremony was attended by Miguel Ceara Hatton, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources; Pablo del Toro, Head of Environment Management at Grupo Piñero; José Ramón Reyes, Deputy Minister of Coastal and Marine Resources; and Alex Matas, Director of Eco-Bahia foundation Dominican Republic.
