A united effort to protect sea turtles in the Dominican Republic

The Eco-Bahia foundation continues to strengthen its efforts for sea turtle conservation in the Dominican Republic. In a remarkable show of collaboration, hotels, foundations, and companies in the eastern region have joined forces to protect turtle nests on the beaches of Bavaro and Punta Cana.

Collaborative beach management workshop

Through the workshop “Collaborative Management of Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches”, led by Eco Bahia and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, a more comprehensive strategy for sea turtle conservation in tourist areas was developed.

More than 30 participants from renowned hotel chains such as Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, Dreams Hotel, Sunscape, RIU, Hard Rock, Majestic, as well as local NGOs and environmental authorities, took part in this second edition of the workshop.

Concrete actions to protect turtle nests

The training emphasized key measures to ensure the safety of turtle nests and the successful hatching of baby sea turtles:

  • Installing signage along nesting beaches and trails.
  • Training hotel staff to identify and safeguard nesting sites.
  • Raising awareness among guests and local communities about the importance of protecting endangered sea turtles.
The power of teamwork

Alex Matás, Director of the Eco-Bahia foundation in the Dominican Republic, highlighted:

“This initiative, in addition to strengthening ties with hotel chains in Bavaro, demonstrates the positive impact that teamwork can have on preserving endangered species.”

This collaboration not only protects sea turtles and their habitats, but also showcases the vital role that tourism companies can play in environmental conservation.

An inspiring commitment to sustainability

By joining forces, hotels, foundations, and tourism companies in Punta Cana are reinforcing their commitment to sustainability and serving as an inspiring example for other industries and communities.

The Eco-Bahia foundation reaffirms its mission to promote environmental education and biodiversity conservation, bringing together allies to protect the natural heritage of the Dominican Republic.
