Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation

Eco-Bahia foundation closed 2021 by protecting 1,245 sea turtle nests and releasing a total of 110,058 hatchlings into the sea. This year, the foundation implemented new projects such as Beach Temperature Profiles, Genetics Project, and Nesting Female Tagging, all aimed at benefiting these species.

Additionally, the foundation worked closely with authorities, civil associations, and research centers to protect turtles in the region. Over the past 10 years, a total of 46 students have completed internships conducting research on sea turtles.

Eco-Bahia’s Mission and History

Eco-Bahia foundation was created by Bahia Principe, part of Grupo Piñero, and its founder Don Pablo Piñero, with a focus on environmental conservation and promoting a sustainable lifestyle. Over 22 years, Eco-Bahia has protected 18,879 sea turtle nests and released 1,784,904 hatchlings into the ocean.

Beyond sea turtles, the foundation also safeguards wildlife through campaigns like Speed Control and Do Not Feed or Disturb, providing care to injured or at-risk animals with the support of veterinary experts.

Research and Monitoring Projects

This year, the foundation implemented Beach Temperature Monitoring to assess substrate conditions for the benefit of sea turtles. It also collaborated on ProNatura A.C.’s Genetics Project, collecting tissue samples to study national populations, and has participated since 1999 in Nesting Female Tagging with Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C., tracking the life history of nesting females.

Katia Cordourier, Director of Eco-Bahia, highlighted: “Only by knowing, respecting, and loving the life forms and nature around us can we achieve a sustainable lifestyle and protect our environment.”

Environmental Education and Awareness

Eco-Bahia promotes environmental education to raise awareness about protecting the environment. Since its inception, it has conducted awareness talks for resort staff, sharing Best Environmental Practices.

Teamwork is a core value, creating partnerships with authorities and associations like ProNatura A.C., DIF Quintana Roo, ECOSUR, PROFEPA, SEMARNAT, and CONANP. The foundation also participates in state and municipal committees for sea turtle protection and events like the Tulum Sea Turtle Festival.

Collaboration with Institutions and Students

Key allies include Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C., collaborating on projects to protect important beaches such as Playa Aventuras DIF. Each year, 4 to 6 biology students complete internships, and to date, 46 students from various universities have participated.

“As part of Grupo Piñero, we care deeply about our environment. Only by working together can we build a better planet. We invite everyone to join the We are ecocentric movement to care for and protect this extraordinary planet,” concluded Katia Cordourier.

Looking Ahead to 2022

In 2022, Eco-Bahia will continue to innovate and develop new conservation and environmental education programs with staff and students. Protecting natural habitats and implementing impact mitigation strategies will remain the foundation’s main objectives.
