Marine Conservation at Playa Aventuras DIF

Eco-Bahia foundation, the environmental branch of Grupo Piñero in Mexico and partner of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, has released the results of the third quarter 2025 of the SAK Program, an initiative designed to prevent marine pollution and foster community participation in the conservation of beaches, mangroves, and marine ecosystems.

During July and August, cleanup campaigns were carried out at Playa Aventuras DIF and the mangrove area, where 243 nurdles (primary and secondary microplastics) were collected and reported to the international platform Nurdle Patrol. In addition, common waste such as PET bottles, glass, plastic bags, and cigarette butts was removed. In total, a surface area of 235 meters of beach and 300 meters of mangrove was restored, although the September campaign had to be canceled due to adverse weather conditions.

Common Waste and Consumption Patterns

These campaigns were complemented by the monthly waste classification process in coordination with Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, which revealed concerning consumption patterns: packaging from personal care products, construction materials, and hazardous waste such as batteries, lightbulbs, and syringes. These findings highlight the urgency of fostering a culture of reduction, reuse, and recycling throughout the region.

“Every action taken by our volunteers, collaborators, and partners represents an essential step in the protection of our seas and coasts. The SAK Program demonstrates that when communities unite, even the smallest gestures can generate a significant impact on marine life and contribute to building a more sustainable future,” stated Luis Verdín, Manager of Eco-Bahia Foundation in Mexico.

Regenerative Tourism and Sustainability in Tulum

The SAK Program is part of the commitment of Grupo Piñero and Eco-Bahia foundation to advance toward a model of regenerative tourism, where biodiversity conservation and environmental education serve as central pillars. These initiatives directly support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Through the collaboration of volunteers, Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, Tulum Country Club, Nurdle Patrol, Tulum Circula, and the local community, the SAK Program reaffirms that collective community efforts are key to preserving the natural capital of Quintana Roo.
