Eco-Bahia at the 1st Sea Turtle Conservation Forum
On June 21, 2024, Eco-Alianza de Loreto A.C. hosted the 1st Sea Turtle Conservation Outreach Forum, an event that brought together experts and environmental advocates dedicated to protecting these emblematic marine species.
Among the distinguished speakers was Nadia Luisa Islas Madrid, Environmental Education Supervisor at the Eco-Bahia, who presented the lecture “Science, Care and Awareness for Sea Turtle Conservation.”
As a Hydrobiologist and Master of Science in the Use, Management and Preservation of Natural Resources, Nadia Luisa Islas Madrid has extensive experience working with olive ridley, green, and loggerhead turtles across multiple conservation camps.
In her presentation, she emphasized that sea turtles are vital to the health of oceans, playing a key role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance. However, these species are categorized as vulnerable and require urgent conservation and protection measures.
One of the highlights of Eco-Bahia’s participation in this forum was showcasing the importance of environmental education.
Nadia stressed that through educational programs, it is possible to foster a culture of respect and care for sea turtles, inspiring younger generations to take part in marine biodiversity protection.
The Eco Bahia Foundation, through its Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program, works each nesting season monitoring nests, releasing hatchlings, and raising awareness in coastal communities.
The event took place at the Regional Center for Teacher Education (CREN) and the Community Environmental Center (CenCoMA) in Loreto, with support from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, the X Municipality of Loreto, and CREN.
Students, authorities, and the general public attended the sessions, actively contributing to the exchange of experiences and knowledge.
The participation of Nadia Luisa Islas Madrid not only reinforced Eco Bahia’s commitment to sea turtle conservation but also highlighted the crucial role of women in science and environmental protection.
Her work within Eco-Bahia’s Environmental Education Program plays a key role in raising awareness about the urgent need to protect sea turtles and their habitats.
Eco Bahia’s presence at this forum reaffirms its commitment to environmental education, species conservation, and ocean protection. Initiatives like this are essential to ensuring that sea turtles remain a vital part of marine biodiversity in Mexico and the Caribbean.
