Sea turtle conservation in Quintana Roo

The Eco-Bahia foundation led the Second Session of the State Committee for Sea Turtles of Quintana Roo 2019, a key meeting to coordinate actions in favor of protecting these species. The event took place at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba Hotel, with the participation of representatives from institutions, associations, and turtle nesting camps across the state.

The State Committee for Sea Turtles has the mission of coordinating, deliberating, and making decisions to promote the conservation and protection of sea turtles. This session brought together 61 attendees, including managers of nesting camps, civil associations, representatives of CONANP, PROFEPA, SEMARNAT, and authorities from the Mexican Navy.

Progress in environmental education and monitoring

During the session, participants presented progress in environmental education and the initiatives developed throughout the state to raise awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles. Research and monitoring results were also shared, including the identification of diseases affecting the species and their possible causes.

The Eco-Bahia foundation, which manages Playa Aventuras —one of the most important beaches for Loggerhead and Green turtle nesting—, took the lead in this session. Biologist Itandehuil Ramos, from Eco-Bahia, presented updated results on nesting and hatchling numbers across Quintana Roo.

Nesting results at Playa Aventuras

By the end of July 2019, a total of 1,000 nests of Loggerhead and Green turtles had been recorded, along with the release of 9,687 Loggerhead hatchlings. These achievements would not have been possible without the commitment and support of all the sectors involved in the conservation program.

Eco-Bahia’s continuous work at Playa Aventuras has provided valuable data for research. Year after year, the beach continues to be chosen by Loggerhead turtles as a nesting site, showing clear conservation progress while reminding us that the effort must remain constant.

Commitment from Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort

According to Katia Cordourier, director of the Eco-Bahia foundation, this effort is possible thanks to the dedication of field technicians and university students who participate in the program. Their daily work ensures compliance with regulations to protect this endangered species.

She also highlighted the collaboration of all departments at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, whose support has been essential for the successful development of the sea turtle conservation and release program.
