Sustainable Waste Management in Samaná
Thanks to the joint efforts of Grupo Piñero, the Eco-Bahia foundation, and several key partners, the first Green and Circular Station has been inaugurated in Las Terrenas, Samaná. This pioneering initiative promotes environmental education, sustainable waste management, and a circular economy model for the local community.
The project was made possible through the collaboration of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), the Las Terrenas Municipality, the Samaná Tourism Cluster, the Luz y Fuerza Company, and the Center for the Conservation and Eco-Development of the Samaná Bay and its Surroundings (CEBSE).
Designed as an innovative pilot, the Green and Circular Station seeks to implement sustainable practices and strengthen a culture of recycling in the province of Samaná.
The station will operate under the management of the Las Terrenas Municipality and the Eco-Bahia foundation, supported by GIZ and Luz y Fuerza. Its functions include:
- Establishing collection routes for solid waste.
- Receiving waste directly from citizens.
- Running pilot recycling programs with local businesses.
Once at the station, the waste will be washed, sorted, and properly processed. Starting in September, the facility will also include machinery for plastic transformation, closing the loop on waste management.
Education and Long-Term Sustainability
To ensure the project’s continuity, Grupo Piñero, through Eco-Bahia, will reinforce long-term actions focused on environmental education and waste management training.
“For Grupo Piñero, being part of this initiative is a commitment to the sustainable development of Samaná. From the Eco-Bahia foundation, we will work with all partners to ensure that environmental education becomes a constant in the community, integrating waste management into daily life,” stated Alex Matas, Director of Eco Bahia Foundation RD.
Located at the Luz y Fuerza facilities in Las Terrenas, the station will also serve as an educational space. Through the activity “The Journey of Waste”, students, tourists, and local residents will learn about the entire waste process: from collection and storage to recycling and transformation.
These experiences will highlight the impact of plastics on Samaná’s biodiversity, raising awareness about the importance of protecting ecosystems.
The opening of the Green and Circular Station in Samaná marks a significant step towards sustainable tourism, community engagement, and environmental protection in the Dominican Republic.
With the collaboration of Eco-Bahia, Grupo Piñero, and local stakeholders, this project will help build a greener, cleaner, and more resilient future for the region.
