Eco-Bahia reinforces environmental education
With the goal of fostering ecological awareness and promoting sustainability from the classroom, the Eco-Bahia foundation, part of Grupo Piñero, has signed inter-institutional agreements with several Educational Districts located in key tourist destinations of the Dominican Republic. The initiative will reach 19 schools in ecologically valuable areas such as Bávaro, San Pedro de Macorís, and Samaná, where balancing development and conservation is essential.
The agreements, signed as part of the foundation’s educational program, establish a collaboration that will implement a comprehensive plan for environmental education in the participating schools during the academic years 2025–2028. This initiative aligns with the mission of the Eco-Bahia foundation to conserve the country’s biodiversity by integrating environmental education as a key tool to achieve a sustainable future in harmony with the natural environment.
“Environmental education is one of the most powerful tools to transform the present and protect the future. With this alliance, we are planting in the new generations the seed of respect for nature, in territories where the balance between tourism and sustainability is vital. Investing in education means investing in a more conscious, fair, and resilient development model,” stated Alex Matás, Director of the Eco-Bahia foundation in the Dominican Republic.
The Educational Districts that are part of the agreement include District 05-01 of San Pedro de Macorís, District 14-04 of Samaná, District 14-05 of Sánchez, District 14-07 of Las Terrenas, and District 12-01 of Higüey, all located in areas of high ecological value and significant importance for tourism in the country.
The program includes a series of activities designed to actively engage the school community in environmental topics. These include workshops and lectures on biodiversity, ecosystems, and local protected areas, as well as practical activities focused on sustainability and care for the environment. Key environmental dates, such as Earth Day and World Environment Day, will also be observed through initiatives adapted to each school community.
Additionally, the agreements allow the possibility of incorporating new schools over the next three years, subject to joint evaluation between the foundation and the relevant districts, thereby ensuring the progressive expansion of the program’s impact.
This collaboration between the Eco-Bahia foundation and the Dominican educational system represents a decisive step toward building an environmentally conscious citizenry, particularly in regions where tourism coexists closely with protected areas and fragile ecosystems.
Through these actions, Grupo Piñero, via its foundation, reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the responsible development of the destinations where it operates, as part of the global strategy of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts.
