A rescue that inspires awareness about marine life protection
An endangered sea turtle was successfully rescued on Playa Honda, Cayo Levantado (Samaná), after an incident that moved both the local community and visitors. The animal, an adult female of the species Chelonia mydas (green sea turtle), approximately 50 centimeters long, was injured and partially trapped in the sand.
The emergency was reported by the Eco-Bahia team, who promptly notified the local authorities and the Ministry of Environment in the region, coordinating immediate action to safeguard the turtle.
“When we arrived at the beach, the turtle was exhausted and clearly stressed. Her condition was critical, but fortunately, we were able to assist her before she suffered further harm. It was a true team effort, with volunteers and local authorities doing an incredible job,” said Daniel Aurelio Reyes, Coordinator of the Eco-Bahia foundation in the Dominican Republic.
After receiving first aid, the turtle was safely transported to the National Aquarium in Santo Domingo, where she is now receiving specialized veterinary care. The goal is to ensure her full recovery before her reintroduction into the marine environment.
This successful rescue not only saved a life but also highlights the importance of environmental education, sea turtle conservation, and the promotion of sustainable fishing practices across the region.
The Eco-Bahia foundation, together with Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, actively leads programs dedicated to the protection of marine biodiversity and the reduction of waste on beaches and oceans. The organization continues to encourage fishermen and visitors to report any situation that could endanger marine fauna and to practice greater respect toward fragile coastal ecosystems.
“We are very grateful for the swift response and the support of everyone involved. This type of collaboration is essential to protect our marine species and ensure their future,” added Reyes.
The Cayo Levantado community has come together to celebrate the successful rescue of this green sea turtle, renewing its collective commitment to marine conservation and a more sustainable future for the Dominican Republic.
