The Eco-Bahia foundation Celebrates Tree Day with Awareness and Action in Riviera Maya

More than 70 collaborators participated in a sensory and educational experience about the importance of trees in local ecosystems.

The foundation has produced over 35,000 native plants and has been leading conservation efforts in the region for more than two decades.

As part of Tree Day, celebrated on the second Thursday of July in Mexico, the Eco-Bahia foundation organized a special event for collaborators of the Bahia Principe Hotels Riviera Maya complex. The activity took place on July 10th in the collaborators’ area in Tulum, aiming to raise awareness about the ecological and cultural value of trees in the region.

During the event, participants explored the importance of conserving native species through visual, tactile, and emotional experiences. The day included an educational tour featuring local and foreign trees and shrubs, a display of seeds and fruits, and an installation simulating the deforestation process used to produce paper.

One of the most moving moments was the symbolic hugging of trees, accompanied by a short video posing the question: What would happen if everyone planted a tree on their birthday?

“This year, we focused on planting knowledge as much as trees: promoting environmental education so that each transplanted plant carries a meaning of care,” said Luis Verdín, manager of the Eco-Bahia foundation in Mexico.

Environmental Education with Tangible Impact

This activity was part of the Environmental Education program that the Foundation runs year-round in the Mexican Caribbean, aimed at collaborators, local communities, and visitors. Over more than two decades, Eco-Bahia has produced and donated over 35,000 native plants, in addition to leading urban reforestation campaigns, natural area conservation, and ecosystem cleanup events.

In 2024, their actions included:
  • 1,397 plants donated for reforestation in Mexico
  • 4 urban tree planting events
  • Participation of more than 3,000 collaborators in the environmental education program
  • Partnerships with schools, civil associations, and biological research centers
