Eco-Bahia Promotes Marine Conservation in the Mexican Caribbean

More than 100 participants, including children, youth, and families, took part in educational and recreational activities during the 23rd Tulum Sea Turtle Festival 2025. The event took place from October 24 to 26 in Akumal, Tulum, and Xcacel-Xcacelito, reinforcing the importance of protecting sea turtles and their coastal ecosystems—one of the main causes championed by Eco-Bahia.

The Foundation’s environmental education program continues to position itself as a regional reference in marine conservation throughout the Mexican Caribbean, promoting regenerative tourism and community learning.

Educational Activities to Protect Sea Turtles

During the festival, the Eco-Bahia team led interactive activities designed to raise awareness about the threats faced by sea turtles. These included “Protect the Nest,” a learning game focused on nest conservation; “Turturoletta,” a knowledge-based game about species and conservation; and “Ghost Fishing: Free the Turtle!”, which highlights the impact of abandoned fishing nets on marine life.

Over 100 people participated in these experiences, which concluded with an artistic workshop where participants decorated sea turtle-shaped pots and mandalas, encouraging creativity, connection with nature, and environmental commitment.

Building Community Connections in Akumal, Tulum, and Xcacel-Xcacelito

The opening parade in Akumal featured music, dance, and artistic performances symbolizing the arrival of sea turtles to the coast. Activities continued in Tulum and Xcacel-Xcacelito, strengthening community engagement and highlighting the importance of clean beaches and healthy ecosystems.

Additionally, the Eco-Bahia team, under the name “Los Caguameros,” proudly won third place in the sand sculpture contest, showcasing teamwork and creativity.

Inspiring Future Generations

“Our mission is to inspire new generations to protect marine ecosystems. Every smile, every game, and every question is a seed of awareness that will grow into a more sustainable future,” said Luis Verdín, Manager of Eco-Bahia in Mexico.

The festival was organized in collaboration with Centro Ecológico Akumal, Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México A.C., Tulum Circula, Red Ambiental, Fundación Santuario Akumal, Santuario Xcacel-Xcacelito, and local environmental authorities.
