The Eco-Bahia foundation, together with Telesecundaria Eleuterio Llanes Pasos from Akumal, celebrated International Wetlands Day with a visit to the wetlands area at Hotel Grand Bahia Principe Tulum. During the activity, students received a talk about the importance of environmental care and preserving local ecosystems.
International Wetlands Day has been celebrated annually on February 2nd since 1997, in commemoration of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971. This treaty was the first global agreement focused on wetland conservation and sustainable use, making it a key focus for the Eco-Bahia foundation every year.
The activity involved 15 students from Telesecundaria Eleuterio Llanes Pasos, who carry out environmental actions at school and in their community, promoting cleanup campaigns and reforestation projects. These efforts highlight that wetlands are essential to maintaining ecological balance in Quintana Roo.
Katia Cordourier Real, director of Eco-Bahia, emphasized to the students:
"Celebrating International Wetlands Day is so important that it should not be limited to just one day. We must promote their health throughout the year by avoiding littering, protecting water quality, and caring for the species that inhabit these ecosystems."
This celebration is part of the Eco-Bahia foundation’s efforts to educate new generations about the importance of wetlands and their conservation, ensuring that students apply this knowledge in daily life and within their community.
The collaboration between Eco-Bahia and Telesecundaria Eleuterio Llanes Pasos strengthens environmental awareness in Quintana Roo, fostering a continuous commitment to ecosystem protection and sustainability throughout the state.
