Fostering reading and a love for the Earth: a day to sow awareness from childhood

The Eco-Bahia foundation commemorated World Book Day with a heartfelt program of environmental education and reading promotion for elementary school children in the community of Cobá, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Education of Tulum.

The event brought together 40 students in a playful, educational, and deeply inspiring experience, where books and nature took center stage. This celebration also coincided with International Mother Earth Day, reinforcing the message that caring for the planet and cultivating knowledge go hand in hand.

Stories, green wishes, and little great readers

Throughout the day, the children participated in activities such as:
• 📖 “I am a book and I speak of…”: where they imagined their own ecological message.
• 🌳 “The Tree of Wishes”: a dynamic exercise to write personal commitments to the environment.
• 📚 Reading of environmental stories: focused on marine animals, flora, turtles, and biodiversity conservation.

These activities not only encouraged a love for reading but also awakened in children a stronger environmental awareness, demonstrating how books can be powerful tools for change.

Reading as a seed for a sustainable future

“A book is much more than paper and ink: it is a doorway to knowledge, imagination, and a deeper awareness of how we inhabit the world,” said Luis Verdín, Manager of the Eco-Bahia foundation in Mexico.

The event not only celebrated the value of books but also highlighted their role in shaping empathetic, informed, and environmentally responsible generations.

Environmental education: a cornerstone of the Eco-Bahia foundation

At Eco-Bahia, we believe that sowing awareness from childhood is essential to building a fairer and more sustainable future. For this reason, every community activity is designed to inspire positive actions and strengthen the bond with nature.

We thank the Directorate of Education of Tulum for opening this space for collaboration, and we reaffirm our commitment to children’s environmental education as a tool to transform realities.
