Environmental awareness and education

The Eco-Bahia foundation celebrated World Ecology Day with activities designed to raise community awareness about the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship with the environment. These included educational talks for small groups, demonstrating nesting, the work of turtle conservationists, and the release of sea turtle hatchlings, marking one of the most successful seasons in recent years.

In addition, tours were conducted with owners of Bahia Principe Residences for the careful cleaning of green areas and the recovery of spaces after the hurricane, promoting responsible and sustainable habits within the community.

Sea turtle nesting season

The 2020 nesting season is concluding, and Eco-Bahia reports it has been one of the most successful in recent years. For 20 years, the foundation has run the Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program at Playa Aventuras, nationally recognized for its importance in loggerhead turtle nesting.

As part of World Ecology Day, in-person talks were held following all safety measures, where conservationists explained to guests, collaborators, and residents how nesting occurs and how hatchlings are assisted to reach the sea.

Conservation results and achievements

“With all our programs, we aim to bring the community closer to the natural wealth around us and show how they can contribute to its conservation. To date, we have recorded 2,112 nests of loggerhead and green turtles, with 125,051 hatchlings released into the sea,” said Katia Cordourier, director of the Eco-Bahia foundation.

Cleanup and recovery after climate events

Following Hurricane Zeta in Quintana Roo, special emphasis was placed on the cleaning and recovery of green areas. On October 31, a tour was organized with residents and owners of Bahia Principe Residences to encourage care for the environment and teach younger generations the importance of protecting nature after a climate event.

“On World Ecology Day, we remember the importance of the work of ecologists and everyone who works for nature. It is the responsibility of all to create habits that benefit flora, fauna, and the environment,” concluded Katia Cordourier.
