Together for the Oceans: A Day of Cleanup and Environmental Awareness
Every year on June 8, the world celebrates World Oceans Day, a key date to raise awareness about the importance of oceans, which cover more than 70% of our planet and are essential for life on Earth.
To mark the occasion, the Eco-Bahia foundation, in partnership with Scubaquatic and with the support of Zofemat, organized a beach and marina cleanup at Playa Aventuras DIF. The activity brought together residents, hotel guests, staff, and nearby communities with one main goal: to raise awareness about protecting our oceans and inspire sustainable actions that reduce marine pollution.
Today, 90% of large marine fish species are depleted, and over 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed. Faced with this reality, the United Nations’ 2024 theme for World Oceans Day was “Awaken New Depths”, an urgent call to change our relationship with the oceans in a more empathetic and sustainable way.
Yuritzi Espino, Manager of the Eco-Bahia foundation, emphasized:
“Together, we can make a difference and work toward a future where our oceans thrive in all their magnificence.”
During the event, volunteers collected 48.3 kg of waste, including:
- plastic bottle caps and cigarette butts
- PET bottles, glass, and cans
- food wrappers and plastic bags
- marine debris such as rope, part of a buoy, and a piece of a boat
- miscellaneous items like a plastic ceiling panel and a glucose lancet
Beyond removing visible trash, the initiative aimed to foster a deeper connection with the marine environment, encouraging participants to adopt more sustainable habits.
Through initiatives like this, the Eco-Bahia foundation reaffirms its commitment to environmental education and ocean conservation, inspiring the community to reduce marine pollution and work toward a healthier future for all.
On this World Oceans Day, let’s remember that every action counts: from reducing single-use plastics to joining community cleanups, we can all help protect our invaluable marine heritage.
