To mark the beginning of sea turtle nesting season, Eco-Bahia foundation celebrated Sea Turtle Day in Mexico with a special ceremony and educational activities for children and families. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles, one of the most iconic and vulnerable species of coastal ecosystems.
The celebration took place on DIF Aventuras beach, where attendees witnessed the creation of a sand sculpture of a Loggerhead turtle, crafted by artist Fred Balam Art, who was recognized for his outstanding contribution to ecological awareness and biodiversity protection.
The ceremony included a traditional Mayan ritual with the participation of hotel guests, residents of Tulum Country Club, and guests from the Otoch Pall community center. As part of the ritual, flowers were offered as a symbol of good wishes for a safe and successful nesting season.
Yuritzi Espino, Manager of Eco-Bahia foundation, stated: “We are excited to begin the 2023 sea turtle nesting season, a year with new challenges. By following the established protection protocols, we expect an outstanding season closing in September and October, together with the community and our allies.”
Eco-Bahia foundation expressed its gratitude to collaborators, volunteers, and community members for their commitment to protecting sea turtles. Thanks to these joint efforts, previous nesting seasons have recorded a high number of protected nests and hatchlings released along the beaches of the Riviera Maya, contributing to the preservation of species such as Loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles.
Through these initiatives, Eco-Bahia foundation and Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts reaffirm their dedication to marine conservation, environmental education, and community collaboration to ensure a sustainable future for sea turtles.
