Conservation and Environmental Education in the Riviera Maya
On the occasion of World Shorebirds Day, Eco-Bahia, the environmental branch of Grupo Piñero and Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, reaffirmed its commitment to conservation and environmental education.
The initiative promotes the observation, knowledge, and protection of key species for coastal ecosystems, raising awareness among tourists, local communities, and children about their importance.
Shorebirds are considered vital indicators of the health of beaches, mangroves, and wetlands. These species help control populations of insects and small marine organisms, disperse seeds, and maintain the natural balance of ecosystems. However, they face increasing threats such as habitat loss and pollution.
During the event, the Wildlife Team of Eco-Bahia carried out scientific monitoring tours, registering species such as the Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos), Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), and the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus).
These records were shared on international platforms such as eBird and iNaturalist, contributing valuable data to global conservation databases for migratory birds.
At the same time, the Environmental Education Program engaged children from the Kids Club with the activity “Let’s Count Birds Together!”. Equipped with binoculars, the children observed shorebirds directly on the beach, learning about their role in ecosystems.
They also took part in creative workshops such as making shorebird puppets, a playful way to strengthen environmental awareness from an early age.
“Shorebirds are the natural guardians of our coasts. Their presence reminds us of the interconnection between biodiversity, communities, and responsible tourism. At Eco-Bahia, we work every day to ensure that new generations learn to observe, value, and protect the environment that sustains us,” said Luis Verdín, Manager of Eco-Bahia foundation in Mexico.
Since its creation in 1999, the Foundation has promoted conservation and environmental education programs aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action and biodiversity protection.
These actions reinforce the role of Eco-Bahia as a regional leader in regenerative tourism, natural capital conservation, and environmental education in the Riviera Maya.
The organization invites the community, tourists, and partners to join in protecting the environment and marine life by making donations through its official website: 👉https://eco-bahia.com/colabora.
