Raising Awareness About Groundwater

Eco-Bahia foundation celebrated World Water Day with a cleanup of the path leading to the cenotes in Chemuyil, expert talks on caves, and beach cleaning activities. The main goal was to raise awareness about the importance of water under this year’s UN theme: “Groundwater – making the invisible visible.”

With the participation of community cooperatives Bejil Ha and Xunan Ha, more than 150 kg of waste was collected. Cave experts explained the importance of keeping cities clean to prevent contamination of cenotes and protect the ecosystems that depend on them.

Importance of Protecting Water Resources

Groundwater feeds rivers, lakes, lagoons, and wetlands, eventually flowing into the oceans. These aquifers supply both humanity and diverse ecosystems, so soil pollution directly impacts water quality.

It is essential to turn awareness into concrete actions that promote sustainable habits. Taking responsibility for water today ensures a better planet for future generations.

Cleanups and Environmental Education

“We joined the global celebration of water by cleaning the path to the ‘La Cueva’ cenote in Chemuyil. At the end, cave experts gave a talk about the importance of keeping our cities clean to protect the cenotes,” said Yuritzi Espino Rivera, Manager of Eco-Bahia foundation.

The Bejil Ha and Xunan Ha cooperatives participated in the activity. They are well-known for protecting fragile ecosystems like cenotes and shared information about rescue actions carried out in the Chemuyil cenotes, demonstrating the importance of community collaboration.

We are ecocentrics Movement and Beach Care

Environmental education is key to raising awareness about protecting water, local flora and fauna, and encouraging participation in global initiatives such as the We are ecocentric movement by Grupo Piñero. This movement invites everyone to take concrete actions to preserve our planet.

Recently, Eco-Bahia foundation participated in cleaning one kilometer of Playa Aventuras DIF, in collaboration with various associations, reinforcing reef conservation and the importance of keeping our coasts clean.

Commitment to the Environment

“We are convinced that collaboration and joint efforts are essential to protect our environment and this vital resource. On World Water Day, we reaffirm our commitment to implement sustainable actions in our workplaces and communities, promoting environmental awareness and protection,” added Yuritzi Espino Rivera.

Activities like these reinforce the mission of Eco-Bahia and Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts to educate, protect, and preserve the environment, showing that every action counts toward a more sustainable future.
