The Eco-Bahia foundation commemorated International Coastal Cleanup Day with a waste collection brigade along the coastline of Xcacel-Xcacelito in the Riviera Maya. The activity involved Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort staff, volunteers, and residents of Tulum Country Club, who gathered several kilos of waste, mainly plastic and glass bottles, caps, aluminum cans, and Styrofoam debris.

This action is part of the “We are ecocentric” movement, promoted by Grupo Piñero, which encourages communities to protect beaches, coasts, and marine ecosystems through sustainable initiatives led by the Eco-Bahia foundation.

An international cleanup effort

The activity took place as part of the International Coastal Clean Up, a global campaign promoted by Ocean Conservancy and held in more than 150 countries. In Tulum, volunteers and collaborators joined this cause to collect inorganic waste accumulated in the area, thus contributing to the conservation of one of the most iconic beaches in Quintana Roo.

The main goal of this event was to fight coastal waste pollution while promoting environmental awareness among residents, tourists, and local organizations.

Collection and recycling in the Riviera Maya

Early in the morning, participants gathered at Xcacel-Xcacelito beach, recognized as one of the most beautiful in the Riviera Maya. The brigade collected plastics, glass, caps, cans, bags, ropes, fishing lines, disposable cups, and face masks. All waste was transported to the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort collection center, where it was integrated into the hotel complex’s recycling program to ensure proper disposal.

Katia Cordourier, director of Eco-Bahia, highlighted that every third Saturday of September, on International Coastal Cleanup Day, the aim is to raise awareness about the conservation of marine spaces and the environment.

Tips for keeping beaches clean

The director of Eco-Bahia reminded that keeping beaches clean depends on small everyday actions. Key recommendations include: not discarding cigarette butts on the sand đźš, separating waste into the proper containers, avoiding glass objects, respecting restricted areas, and reducing single-use plastics.

Through these simple practices, every visitor can help preserve the natural beauty of Xcacel-Xcacelito and all Riviera Maya beaches.
